Document Understanding revolutionizes logistics processes for E/D/E
E/D/E, a 90-year-old family-owned business, supporting €9.3 billion worth of purchases annually, faced critical challenges due to older IT systems and a long legacy.
Finance leader Holger Gerlach (team leader in the finance department at E/D/E), partnered with Office Samurai to automate VAT validation, slashing the six-hour monthly process down to 50 minutes and eliminating €500 in accountant fees.
The largest commercial success was achieved using Document Understanding: this technology enabled the handling of 700 different supplier document formats in the central warehouse, which is crucial for managing 6,300 daily deliveries.
This strategic automation project also secured a lucrative factoring contract by checking 20,000 debtors in just three and a half weeks.

Leveraging UiPath technology and support from Office Samurai, the company successfully deployed 132 automations. Their flagship project, Gutenberg, utilizes Document Understanding to process approximately 12,000 booking confirmation documents from freight carriers annually. This process, which manually consumed close to 2,000 hours per year, now requires human intervention in only 20% of cases, showcasing its high efficiency. Cumulatively, Sappi has saved about 13,000 hours in the European region alone in the last year.
